Public Notification Period Ends for Aquis EIS

THE highly anticipated Aquis Casino and Resort at Yorkeys Knob has reached another important milestone with the completion of the public notification period for the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS).

Members of the community, local stakeholders as well as state and local government agencies were invited to comment on the EIS over a six week period with submissions due by 5.00pm on August 5.

The Queensland Government Coordinator General (CoG), who is managing the EIS process, received around 250 individual submissions by the deadline. Aquis would like to thank all those who took the time to review the EIS and make a submission.

Your feedback will ensure we can deliver all the benefits that Aquis will bring to the community while putting in place strategies to mitigate or eliminate potential impacts. The CoG will now thoroughly evaluate the submissions received and identify any issues raised. Aquis will then be provided with an opportunity to respond to the issues (not individual submissions).

The CoG will consider Aquis’ response and then may request supplementary information. Following receipt of the supplementary information, the CoG may require that the relevant stakeholders are notified and given further opportunity to comment. The final step is for the CoG to prepare an Evaluation Report that addresses all the potential impacts of the project.

If Aquis proceeds with a development application (DA), the Report will advise whether the project should be refused or approved subject to conditions included in the Report. Subject to the CoG Evaluation Report not directing refusal, Aquis will then lodge a DA for Preliminary Approval (Section 242 of SPA) to Cairns Regional Council.
